The size of the 1L sections affects the quality and consistency of teaching in law schools. In general, students receive more personalized attention at smaller section sizes of 1L. Southwestern Law School was founded on November 25, 1911 as Southwestern College of Law. John J. Schumacher, its founder, wanted the nonprofit institution to be a law school for women and minorities. The school is the second oldest law school in Los Angeles. The campus is located on Wilshire Boulevard, the city`s main thoroughfare. The Wilshire/Vermont subway station, less than two blocks from campus, offers easy access to courts, government agencies, law firms, and studios. In the fall of 2013, the Faculty of Law opened its first student residence complex on campus with spacious, fully furnished studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units for 155 students. The Great Depression and World War II had a heavy impact on enrollment, and by the late 1930s law school was the only remaining school. However, when the veterans returned home, there was a resurgence of interest in the school, and in 1974 the campus was moved to the school`s current location on Westmoreland Avenue in Los Angeles` Wilshire Center.
Southwestern was founded in 1974 and established the first two-year Young Women degree program offered at a law school recognized by the American Bar Association. SCALE (Southwestern`s Conceptual Approach to Legal Education) is a unique and accelerated JD program. Its intensive schedule is designed to prepare students for the rigors of legal practice.
