You may be eligible for free or low-cost civil legal aid through a legal or pro bono aid program. If you have a legal problem in Georgia, visit www.GeorgiaLegalAid.org for a full directory of civil legal aid programs. If you don`t live in Georgia and need free or low-cost legal assistance, visit www.Lawhelp.org. We provide free civil law services to low-income or elderly Georgian residents in a variety of legal matters. Georgia has two organizations that provide legal advice and support to grandparents and other caregivers: the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Georgia Legal Services Program. The Atlanta Legal Aid Society oversees Atlanta`s five major metropolitan counties (Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, Cobb, and Gwinnett). The Georgia Legal Services Program serves all other counties. The Military Legal Assistance Program, jointly sponsored by the Georgia Legal Services Program and the Georgia State Bar, supports military personnel and veterans by connecting them with members of the state bar who are willing to offer free or discounted legal services. Note: Many companies advertise “legal aid” on the Internet. You should always ask questions to make sure you are seeking services from a program that offers free legal aid.

Grandparents raising their grandchildren often face legal issues related to custody, adoption, public benefits, education, and other issues. Military personnel and veterans often have legal needs in their personal lives and specific to their military service. They also face financial and other civilian issues arising from the sacrifices made in military life. Depending on the ability, clients are connected to a lawyer in their geographic area who has expertise in their area of need. The program assists veterans with service-related disability issues and military members with civil, non-criminal legal needs. Individuals eligible for the program include: (1) military personnel, including Reservists and members of the National Guard, at the E-5 rank or below; (2) any member of the service with problems related to the benefit; (3) retired military members and 100% disabled veterans who are in financial difficulty (financial hardship is presumed if the Veteran`s income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty line); and (4) veterans seeking assistance with a service-related disability or other VA benefits.
