The Faculty of Law at the University of Akron began providing free legal services to people in need in the late 1960s. The SEED (Small Entrepreneur and Economic Development) Legal Clinic was developed as an outgrowth of the original clinic to provide cost-effective legal assistance to emerging businesses in Northeast Ohio. Its mission is to enrich its law students to a higher level by providing them with experience in handling clients` real-life cases under the supervision of human resources lawyers, while exclusively serving new companies that cannot afford a lawyer. Under the supervision of clinical professors, students gain hands-on experience while helping clients with a variety of legal issues. Akron Law`s Trademark Clinic is one of the few clinics of its kind in the country where the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office allows law students to pursue trademark applications. Akron Law`s legal clinics continue to serve, undeterred by the pandemic (15/03/2021) The Human Trafficking Clinic helps victims of human trafficking to erase (destroy) their criminal records. As a general rule, victims of trafficking in human beings are likely to be convicted of incitement or prostitution imposed on them by traffickers. As part of this clinic, our students perform examinations and screenings of potential clients. Our students then get in touch with customers and conduct surveys.

Like Akron Law`s other clinics, the human trafficking clinic offers students real practice and a new life for those who need it. Our branded clinic is one of many courses that allow students to work with real clients under the supervision of a law professor or practicing lawyer. For example, students at the clinic supported referral to UARF Fontus Blue, Inc., a software-as-a-service company specializing in water treatment. What started as a hobby is now a company that counts 25 cities or their water services among its customers and aims for a turnover of 1 million US dollars. The Civil Litigation Clinic supports low-income clients with housing problems.

Cases are referred to the clinic by Community Legal Aid Services, Inc. Students interview clients, investigate the case and prepare the case for court. With an Ohio State Internship Certificate, students represent clients in court under the supervision of the clinic`s staff attorney. Students have the opportunity to appear before Akron Municipal Court, Stow Municipal Court and Barberton Municipal Court, as well as administrative hearings at the Local Housing Authority. The CQE clinic is composed of student volunteers under the supervision of a faculty member of the clinic. During CQE clinics, law students meet with clients who have been criminally convicted and help them apply for a certificate of qualification for employment. In many cases, the law previously prohibited these former offenders from holding certain types of employment or professional licence. The CQC allows the potential employer or licensing authority to employ or issue a licence to the former offender holding the certificate at its discretion. This program gives our students access to a variety of people in the larger Akron community.
